Mary Jean Chan grew up in Hong Kong and studied at Swarthmore College, the University of Oxford and Royal Holloway, University of London. Her debut pamphlet, A Hurry of English, was selected as the 2018 Poetry Book Society Summer Pamphlet Choice. In 2017, Chan's poem '//' was shortlisted for the 2017 Forward Prize for Best Single Poem. She is a Ledbury Poetry Critic, editor of Oxford Poetry, advisory board member at the Poetry Translation Centre and member of the Folio Prize Academy. She is a Lecturer in Creative Writing (Poetry) at Oxford Brookes University and lives in London.

I bought the book, kindle version, today (it was recommended by a friend) and started reading. I could not put it down (until I had to tear myself away to do a task I cannot postpone). I found her poems possessing a tragic and yet serene quality, one that resonate deep into my own past. Born in the same city and being a writer of stories and poems (though far from being the exquisite ones as hers), I can recall much of my younger days: the loneliness, the dreams and yes, the hidden anger.When I read “Practiceâ€, I smiled at the thoughts of the time when I, too, was dressed in white breeches, a foil (I never play epee) in my hand, anxious for victory, fearful of failure. And yes, I have also felt during practicing bouts “yellow blooms of ache for the girl I thought was beautifulâ€. I can still remember her face between the lines.Her subtle message about a period during which her mother’s generation live in fear and despair (beside hunger) also cuts deep. Though more fortunate, my family had suffered in another form of which memory was stitched into that of their descendants.Thank you, Mary Jean Chan, for making me once again the girl I once was and making me cry.
